Hod. J. Carrol at New Plymonth.

DEPUTA l lONS FROM COUNTY COUNCILS.

(By Telegraph!—Press Association.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day,

The Chairman of Taranaki County Council and Chairman of Clifton County Council interviewed Hon. J. Carroll. Tne deputation pointed out that natives were in many cases farm*, ing land and conveying milk to the dairy factories, were using the roads to the samo extent as European settlers,

but they paid no rates. Local bodies were loth to go to the extent of court proceedings, for there was a clause in the Native Land Rating Act of 1904, which stipulate d that no judgment secured against a Maori for the payment of rates could be acted upon without the consent of the Native

Minister. The Minister told the deputation to “ fire away,” that was what he wanted. If they had to take the the Maori to Court and judgment was obtained he would see that rates were paid, even if he had to take land and pay the rates himself.
