HON. J. McGOWAN AND HOSPITALS.

■ ; The ■ Hon. Jas. McGowan, speaking at y the Coromandel Hospital Demonstrar tion, said: With regard to the general principle of such demonstrations, as thait in which they were now talking part, it Was possible that some of the stricter religious sects might hold that Sunday was not the proper day for suth a purpose, but he could not agree with them' in that opinion'. He thought it was one of the fundamental principles of 'Christianity “to do good to others,” and he considered they were all engaged in a good work in holding a demonstration of this character, to raise funds for the dare and treatment of those who were sick in 'body or in mind. Christianity need not only exist inside a church, it should be darned into our every day life, and' if that predefpt were followed it wtodld be better for us all. It was only in Christian •countries that so mudh attention Was given- to the weak and afflicted, ini countries that did not ? profess Christianity little or nothing- Was done for these unfortunates. They knew thle old quotation, ‘He who .giveth; tio thle poor lendeth to the Lord,” and who could be poorer than the (Weak and afflicted? He thought they would 'be giving evidence of their Christianity by endeavouring to idonltri’bute towards such an institution as their hospital.
