The Recent Auckland Tramway Strike.
THE COMPANY CHARGED. ' The hearing of the case in which the Auckland Tramways Company were charged with dismissing ten motor men and four coaductors without a week’s notice, and without good cause, was before the Arbitration, Court on Friday last. The Crown Solicitor, Mr Tole, emphasised the fact that it appeared as though the Company assumed that it was the men’s duty to teach learners, and the men had refused to continue obliging the Company by teaching learners until their grievance was settled. He submitted that with a
little temporising the Company’s cai s would never have stopped running. The work of teaching learners did not come within the scope of the Arbitration Act, and was therefore outside the binding award. He contended that in no case was the ordor to teach, a learner given, and no man had been produced who could say that a learner had been presented to him for instruction. He submitted that the men were not dismissed for good cause, and that, therefore, a breach of the | award had been committed. Decision was reserved.
