In view of tihiei proceeding® of the Nlar vigatibn and£of thei y7ll- - thatfmgre -reactions on British. shipping wr.l he to the advp/nßge of the unrestricted foreigner, tbc f-1-lowing figures are supoJicd to Bri'isb and foreign shipping to the colonies: The tonnage of .British shipping, including Australian and New Zealand entering the Commonwealth during January last was 28'5,6 , 63, as against 98,1:5.3 foreign tonnage. Of the total British tonnage 33,999 was Australian, 34,533 New ! 'Zealand 1 , and 217,431 “other 'British.” While of the total shipping over 25 pea* cent flew a foreign flag, the proportion is considerably reduced when steamers alone are counted. Thie total tonnage of vessels under steam was 267,637, of which 221,971 was British, and 45,666 foreign or about 17 per cent of the total A number of the foreign sailing vessels are of the ‘tramp’ variety, and arrive in th'e busy season on the offchance of picking up a load for ports off the regular lines.
