Heavy Rain at Masterton.
(By Telegraph}—Press Association.) MASTERTON, This Pay. I A phenomenal rainfall of 2.30 inches hasoccurred during twenty-four hours. The downpour is the heaviest recorded for some years. Heavy rains have caused one of the heaviest floods ever known here. Portions of the main streets are covered with flood water, the lower portion of the principal street being covered and several shops flooded out and s.ock damaged. The low-lying country is all under water and some roads are impassable. A Tenui correspondent of the Age telegraphs : “ Floods in Tenui district are the highest ever known, The water has reached Johnstone’s store and was expected to reach a higher point by 7 o’clock last night when the tide was full and backed the river up. The situation is very serious, and settlers are busily engaged in removing all stock to higher levels. Slips and washouts are frequent along the road between Whataki and Tenui.”
