Compulsory Instruction in Shooting.
DEPUTATION TO HON. GEO. FOWLDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This DayThe question of making instruction in marksmanship and military dri'l compulsory in universi’ies and public secondary schools, and of Government assistance towards tho establishment of miniature rifle ranges throughout, was urged on the Minister for Education by a deputation from the National Defence League, which also suggested that tho Government should include instruction in ritlu shooting as one of the subjects in the Manual and Technical Act. Tho Minister replied that these questions wore not in hts department, but ho would bting them before tho minister concerned. He thought it a good thing that the umth of the colony should bo taught to shoot, but ho looked askance at any compulsory proposal, believing that better results could bo got from volunteers than from, pressed men. He felt favourably dis-j posed towards tho placing of miniature; ranges within the reach of every boy. ! Tho°question of including rifle shooting, as a subject under the Manual and, Technical Education Act was one on! which he was not prepared to committj himself at once.
