The Potteries is a district known by name to everyone and the general characseristics of this locality are common knowledge. The well-defined and distinctive conglomeration of towns in North Staffordshire, devoted almost exclusively to the manufacture of pottery, have earned a reputation foxlittle else besides their staple product. Some hime back considerable stir was made in the-papers with regard to the moral conditions of these hives of industry, and the controversy entitled. “ t ?IHE DEVIL IX THE POTTERIES,'’ which was raised by a clergyman of the locality, will easv be recalled. The upshot of the controversy appeared to be that the Pottery towns, though presenting mauy features that m ule our boast of civilisation look a very vain one, were no worse than other industrial centres as regards the particular evil in question.
