CAN LODGERS VOTE IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
Municipal franchise was the subject of a few remarks from Mr John Hutcheson ait a recent meeting of the Labour S&indidales for municipal honV oura ~~Ta Wellington. He con•tradiobed some rectent statements by public men as to limitations placed on lodgers. regarding registration as municipal voters. He knew what he was talking about, for it was upon his mo- "! tion that the section was put in tl;e Municipal Corporations Act of 1900, which extended the franchise. That section provided that any man or woattain of twenty one years of age, who ; bad been three months in a district, and had arranged to pay their board-ing-house keeper four shillings a week } or over for living accommodation,could ” absolutely demand to be placed on the > electoral roll and receive all the privilege® of thie Municipal Act. And it __ was not necessary to be even the sole occupier of a room; the space occupied -by the four legs of a man’s bed was sufficient fot the purposes of the Ajct. “'Any portion of any house,” etc., were the words of the section.
