Householders’ Meeting.
ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The householders’ meeting for the purpose of electing a school committee for the coming twelve months was held in the schoolhouse last night. Mr ft. L. Somers was voted to the chair.
Dr Kenny, the secretary, read the annual report for the past year, which he stated had been one of unexampled progress. The report dealt with the alterations and gardens ■ made in the school grounds. I . The sum of £4B 6s 3d raised locally in j little more than twelve months, had been spent upon the school. Besides the head ' teacher there had been three assistants. The ’ inspector’s report had been vsry satisfactory. ' The reading of tbe inspector’s favourable ! comments upon the head teacher’s methods j and results was followed by applause. The number on the roll was at present 220. The statement of accounts showed that receipts j during the year had been £9O 7s Id, whilst expenses had totalled £BS Is Od, leaving a credit balance of £5 6s Id, which, with the quarterly allowance now due from the Education Board, would nearly enable the committee to meet all liabilities.
On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Hubbard, the report and balance-sheet were received.
Mr Burton, the head teacher, then presented a report upon the school. He pointed out that the passing of standards was a thing now unknown, and explained the system now in vogue for the promotion of pupils. He stated that there was now no such thing as the once known pass, and no certificates are issued. Mr Burton gave the numbers of pupils that had been promoted duringj the past year, the figures showing satisfactory results. One pupil had gained a free place in ti e Auckland Grammar School. The average attendance had been 83 percent, of the roll — below the average for Auckland province. It was probable that the school library would be in operation at the beginning of next year. Mr Burton returned thanks to his statf for its loyal assistance in the work of the school, during the past twelve months. The election of a committee was then proceeded with, Messrs Gilchrist and Hubbard being appointed scrutineers. Candidates were nominated and votes recorded for each as
