AN IMPUDENT THIEF IN AUCKLAND.
A particularly skilful theft Was committed in j Goldwater’s pawnshop, Victoria street, shortly after six last evening. A' young man asked to be shown diajnopd rings. One valued at £65.: was shown him. After he had carefully handled and scrutinised it the young fellow went v ouitsade, (informing the proprietor that fie was going to bring a friend in. The. friend never oame, and Gold water’s suspicions were aroused. He looked at the case containing the ring laist shown. the visitor and found 1 that a valuable ring was missing, and that another ring .valued at ajbput £1 had jfieen substituted. The police were informed. The detejctives arrested Robert' Black, alias Lewis, on a charge of stealing the ring. The ring was not in his possession, but was subsequently recovered by the police. Black, charged with the theft of a gold ring, was remanded for eight days.
Colonel Porter, C 8., who it was announced several,days ago hM been instructed to proceed to IJpper 3angaroa to interview the Prophet Rua, has been detained l in town „by the swollen stale of the rivers, but he will be leaving in a day or so. Those in authority state that there need be absolutely no concern regarding! the “prophet” and his followers, and > hat the rumours regarding his bellicose attitude are without the slightest foundation.
