THE FUTURE OF THE MAORI.
In an address before the Te Ante Students’ Conference in Gis!bbmci, Dr De Lisle, District Health Officer, said there were several ways in which) the Maori injured his health and shortened his life. The Maoris, in adoptingl European customs, did it in only a half-hearted manner. He tried te. be half a Maofii and half a white man. He must either lire as his father lived or live als - the pakeha lived, to be healthy and strong, and know hbw to bring up his children. Eresh air whs essential to health, and was very cheap To live in overcrowded • rooms, without proper ventilation, was a sure way to contract disease. Food should be properly cooked and properly eaten. The Almighty gave them certain teeth and they should use them while eating. To chew up the food well was one of the safeguards against eating too much, and to eat too much was to dig their grave with their teeth. The rooms and: houses they lived in must not be overcrowded, and must be well ventilated, and must be well lighted. A ventilator was necessary to carry off the foul air. A fire place would answer that purpose. Besides eating properly, they should drink properly. The natural drink with man, as well as animals, was water. Maoris dressed too often in accordance with their vanity and pocket, instead of their health. To sum up, the Maori hildren and 'adni'lts must live in pure 1 dr, eat ai sufficiency, but not too mulch, of good food, leave the “wai•■■ipo” alone, and be clothed properly, " ceording to the climate and weather.
