The Chief Justice, interviewed' regarding the work of the Native Land Commission, stated that they had investigated an -area, comprising- many blocks, amounting in all to 121,000 acres, almost all in the Hawke’s Bay. The Commission had prepared) re-' ports on all the blocks, and hope to forward them to the Governor on Wednesday or Thursday. So far they had reviewed 25,000 acres _ foi* communal purposes, 12,000 acres for in'dirvidiual find for. iflagming purpose®, 35,0000 acres for leasing to the natives, while the land available for general settlement, leaving out Waimarama, would be about 20,000. If parliament eancjbio-ned the recommendation of the Commission considerable Maori and European settlement would follow.
