Referring to gold-mining again, it v not ’unfrequently happens that people aTe heard to say .gold-mining is a hazardous thing to have anything to do,with; hut this is not so with careful speculation. It has, no doubt, paid handsomely in this district-. Speculation in the rise or fall of shares in the market, where unlucky persons buy in at a high pi-dee and sell at- a low price, or vice versa, is not. mining; it is simply -gambling.
