Upwards of seventy new volumes have ju3t been added to the Morrinsville library. The new works are chiefly recent fiction, a few scientific works being included. The extent of the library is now upwards of five hundred volumes. The library was founded in 1897, when Mr W, S. Allen presented the first batch of volumes. Since then but little pro grees was made until recently, when, under the secretaryship of Mr W. Weekes, a rapid forward movement has set in. The alterations and additions a Waihou railway station which were promised by the Department, in reply to representations by the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, are now nearly complete. Every indication of progress of the !}own is welcome news to Te Arohans, and at the present time there is no lack of such development taking place. At the present moment Mr J. Rowe’s business premises are being re-inforced by the addition of a spacious twostoried factory. Mr Berghofer’s shop accommodation is being increased by the joining up of another room. Mr Geo. Cullen’s premises have been refitted and enlarged, a large twostoried boarding house is being erected near the Domain by Mr P. Baine, and business premises are about to be erected by Mr T. J. Stanley on his vacant section. Mr Talty is about to erect a sixvroomed house on the old Catholic Church section, and several other private residences are in process of building,
We remind our readers of the social to be held to-night in the Manawaru sohool, The school committee are the organisers, and the proceeds will be devoted to the purposes of the school fund. From what we hear the event is likely to prove a most enjoyable one, and to be largely attended.
Messrs McNicol and Co. hold a stock sale at Morrinsville to-morrow. A good quantity of excellent stock will be brought forward, and the entries include a consignment of ornamental and fruit trees.
Mr Frank Marshall, of Morrinsville, was to leave England a few days ago, returning to New Zealand by the Suez route, and is therefore due to arrive in Auckland on Sunday, September 16th.
An alarming discovery was made by a housewife in the village of Chesterton, North Staffordshire. Upon opening a tin of salmon she found that it contained a finger. We hear that the case between the Assets Board, Waitoa Road Board, and Lockerbie settlers is likely to come before the Supreme Court at Auckland on or about the 20th inst.
A meeting of the Waitoa Church Concert Committee will be held in the Waitoa Church on Thursday evening next at 7,.30.
At about ten minutes to six on Saturday afternoon last, two earthquake tremors, separated by an interval of about one minute, were felt at Te Aroha, accompanied by an audible rumble. The second impulse was the most noticeable, being sufficient to rattle windows. A concert and dance is to be held in the Settler’s Hall, Matamata, on September 7th, in aid of the fund for fencing the recreation reserve. Messrs Price and Steen are the joint secretaries. Matthew, who has just resigned the clerkship of the Raglan County Council, is about to embark upon a journalistic venture in conjunction with Mr Hayward, who was until recently on the staff of the Waikato Times.

We warn our readers against an attempt at intimidation for the extortion ol money fpom country settlers. A firm in Auckland calling itself a confidential enquiry bureau wr >te to a resident of Te Aroha, claiming the sum of £l 2s due to some unknown person. The recipient of this letter returned it, and in due course received a telegram stating that if he did not remit the money, 'he “ bureau ” would sue at once. The parry in question very wisely wrote in reply to this wire, that such proceedings would rcpidly lead the enquiry agents to a closo acquaintance with the police. Since this was sent no further communications have been received. Should anyone else receive similar threatening letters they will know how te deal with them.

In our last issue we stated in error that Dr Kenny attended to Cassie Mace who was wounded at Mangaiti. We are informed that Dr Collins was in charge of the case. A notice of a rate to be made by the Matamata Road Board appears in another column.
The Morrinsville flax mill is still keeping fully busy, and it is now pretty certain that full running will continue throughout the winter. As yet there has been no stoppage whatever, the supply of flax having been continuous. We hear that the Waitoa and Mangaiti mills are keeping equally busy. Those who are contemplating buying a winter hat or dress materials for coming season, will be well suited at Miss Lavery’s, Whitakerstreet. —Advt.
On Friday night the Waitoa branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation hold a concert and dance at Waitoa, to which Mr Bradley will run a brake from Te Aroha.
