The objects of this Association are wellknown —for a full statement of them we refer you to our printed programme—but briefly they are these: —A more economical and efficient system of local administration ; the rates to he spent in those districts in which they are collected. In view of the coming election of the County Council to be held on the Bth Nov., the Association decided to select four candidates for the four seats of the Waitoa Riding. Our method of selection was as follows : We wrote to several gentlemen, members of the Association, asking them if they were prepared to stand in our interests in the event of them being elected as the candidates of the Association. Had more than the requisite number consented to stand, a choice would have been made by general ballot of our members. As matters turned out we had only the required number of consents, therefore those gentlemen who - declared themselves willing to stand for us, were appointed at the last meeting of our Executive, the candidates of our Association. The candidates are — Mr N. A.LARNEY Mr McGLOIN Mr THOMAS Mr DONALDSON With these gentlemen we go with confidence before the ratepayers of the Waitoa Riding. Mr Larney, as is well-known, has been fighting in the late Council a single-handed fight for efficiency and economy, and the rights of the ratepayers he represented. Mr McGloin has done much to draw attention to the shocking state of our local administration, and having had considerable experience of county work in the local bodies of Taranaki, is just the representative we require to effect the necessary reforms here. Mr Thomas commands the united respect of the district, and from the successful manner in which he has conducted his own business, must prove an able administrator in the cause of reform in county matters. Mr Donaldson, the picked candidate for the Manawaru branch of the Association, is a: gentleman of Canterbury experience of roads and bridges. He comes from a district where the county rate is only one-sixteenth of a penny in the pound, with no road-hoard rate to impoverish settlor’s, and yet possessing excellent roads. His accession to the Council would be a decided gain to the Manawaru ratepayers in particular, and to the whole county in general. It remains now for all ratepayers who prefer common-sense methods to hide-hound suffering, who would rather have good roads than bad, who wish to see the money they pay in rates spent in an economic manner on their roads instead of being wasted on distant- parts of the country. It remains for those to support whole-heartedly the gentlemen who have consented to stand in the inj terests of the Piako Ratepayers’ Reform Association. R. 0. ALLEN, \ Chairman.
