[by telegraph—press association.] Auckland, This Day. The expedition in search of the Elingamite’s gold proved fruitless, .nothing but tempestuous weather being met with the whole time. The Emma Sims took seventeen days to reach Three Kings instead of seven, and then the weather was too rough 1 even to locate the wreck. After an absence of five weeks in all, the vessel had to return to Auckland. A fire occurred in the inalthouse at Messrs Campbell and Ehrenfried’s brewery, and caused damage of about £BOO, which is covered by insurances in the Alliance and South British companies. .

The inquest was formally opened on Murrison, the wharf labourer, found in Chapel Street. The detectives suspect murder, as Murrison was terribly battered about. The eyes were closed up and neck swollen and head badly bruised. He left his house early on Monday night* and was afterwards seen in the Criterion hotel in the company of a certain woman. At about eleven o’clock two seamen state that they saw the man being dragged up some steps near the hotel, .and a man who slept in the house where Murrison was found, says he heard a noise in the passage at about eleven o’clock. No arrests have yet been made.

At the opening of the Synod, Bishop Neligan’s address was largely d voted to betting and gambling and strongly condemned the totalisator and facilities provided by the Telegraph Department for betting. A little girl, Ruby Barrett, stated to be 17 years of age, but looking much younger, was before the Court on five charges of false pretences. About a year ago she ran away from home and took refuge with a family named Styles at Henderson, to whom she averred she was related to Lord Charles Beresford,. Nellie Stewart, Wilson Barrett, and other celebrities. To keep up the fiction she wrote letters to herself in their names and read them out to the Styles Some of the letters made rather amusing reading. Occasionally she went to Auckland and got groceries with forged orders which she [took back as presents. After a while the truth came out. Her parents had beer, unable to trace her after she left home. Her father paid for the goods and the girl was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on.

Haw era This Day. When approaching Tongahoe bridge with a load of milk for the factory, J. P. Bartser’s horse shied and went over a cliff. The driver jumped out just in time, the cart being smashed to pieces, and the horse was drowned in the river. , Gisborne, This Day. An amusing case, interesting friond'y societies, was heard at the Magistrate’s Court. At a recentj Druid’s social, two auctioneers sold baskets of “possessions” at 11 p.m , and were charged with a breach of the i act in selling after 6 p.m. In defence it was alleged that they sold only picture postcards which were claimed to be works of art and with these went the right of taking the' lady owner of the basket into supper. They 1 were fined Is and costs.
