Correspondence

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by Jour correspondents. To the Editor g lß> —We have had a paper sent around during the last few days carefully folded within the daily papers, asking us to strike »ut the two last lines on the ballot paper at the forthcoming licensing poll, carefully sh •lying us the curse of Prohibition, in Maine and other parts of America. We also have the other side giving around books and jpampblets telling us quite a different tale. Now, Mr Editor, I am not a prohibitionist, but I cannot shut my eyes to facts, We have not to gc to America tu see the results of No-license. We have had it in the Clutha electorate for the last ten years. As to results, of course opinions differ, but the district must be better and more prosperous under Prohibition than it was in the days of Licence, because every three years there is a poll taken and the people have shown by their votes that they are satisfied with it Not only do we find the people in Clutha voting for it after having tried it for ten _ years, but every electorate around this prohibited area is following suit. Now, Mr Editor, what conclusion are we to come to. We might give these people credit for having a fair share of common sense, and is it natural to believe that they would vote year after year f r a thing that is an absolute failure r No, Sir, we cannot get away from the fact that it must be a success. I, for one, am not going to take any more notice of the lies circulated by the brewers and other interested parties. I have faith in the decision arrived at by my fellow-colonists down South. I will prove that faith by voting with them. I would urge every electop that reads this letter, to get the figures show ing the results of the last three elections in the electorate I have referred to and I am sure they will come to the decision that I have. I am, etc., Te Aroba.
