Auckland Letter.
[Our own Correspondent.] The city is evidently beginning td feel • the near approach of summer, as lately we have had a few really warm days and occasionally a stray, panama may be seen in Queen Street. The shops are also putting on a more lively appearance than they have worn fdr the last few months, and from all. accounts The coming'season promises to be fairly busy. The deadlock between the Architects' and Builders has certainly helped to accentuate the general depression in nearly all trades but as there is a meeting to be held this week we hope to see the grievances of both sides aired and some more satisfactory and lasting conclusion arrived at. The Aucklanders do not allow diminished receipts to interfere with their general enjoyment as the returns from the various places of entertainment will show.
During the stay of Miss Tittcl Bruno and her confreres, His Majesty’s was packed' to overflowing at each performance .and crowds were nightly turned away. This last week sees the finish of the Fancy Dress Carniva l held in the Olympia Bank. _ Skating has come to stay without doubt, if the number of people who patronise this popular rink i.s anything to go by. Another sportlthat finishes for the year this month is the association game, the last game being played last Saturday at Kingsland between Auckland and Taranaki, resulting in a draw, both sides scoring a goal. The powers that be are hoping to see a team from Te Aroha figuring in the , lists next season, but of this, more anon. From news just to hand I hear-that the New Zealanders have won their .first match in England by fifty-five.pointsto four against Devon. Beyond these few comments nothing of much importance has happened down here, but I would like to ask whether there are any potatoes stored away in Te Aroha. This may seem a rather wild remark, but I think that when I tell you that they have been sold for almost ld each a few days ago you you will excuse my irrelevance.
