William Henry Cowan, formerly employed in the Telegraph Construct-* ion Department arrested at Sydney, was charged yesterday with misanpropriating monies which should have been paid to a number of Government employees. The amounts involved totalled £126. Cowan was remanded on bail. The Auckland Ballot forthe selection of a liberal candidate for the Manakau between Mr R D Stewart and Mr Parr, resulted in the former being chosen. Thames, This Day. A young man named Percy N Young was drowned in the Piako river. He came from Brisbane where his wife and child reside. He was a member of tho Imperial Bushmen Corps, and seived in Africa. Hamilton, This Day. A well-known Maori chief, R ipana Patina of Rangitibei died suddenly on Sunday of heart disease. Napier, This Day. A number of small fires have occurred here of late leading to the suspicion that all are not accidental'.'' The latest occurred on Saturday night and n fire was reported by a man named Frank Williamson who was first on the scene at a fire on the previous night. The police arrested him on a charge of arson. The accused was before the Court yesterday morning, and was remanded on substan‘inl bail.
