Waihou Notes.

(Own Correspondent.) Tha very showery weather vve have had of late has put the roads throughout this district into a rather sloppy condition, "but as the rains .were warm, they had a very beneficial effect on the pasrures, causing the grass fo shoot np, the paddocks now presenting a green and thriving appeal once. There is every indication of an early spring, the willows and other deciduous tiees already shooting into leaf. Our local bu ter factory is- to—commence operations m August 2lst, • aud judging from the numerous young ca>ves at the various farms, a plentiful supply of milk should be forthcoming, and it is to be hoped that the companywill have as successful a • season'tthis year as last. : f y 7- : *. r lhe roads with the exception of one or two places, are in very fair order, cmsideiiug the lime of year. The farmers throughout the district are now busily engaged getting in their oat crops and pioughingup targe areas for their next season’s turnips. The Waihou Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union is forging ahead. At a meeting held last week a good attendance was recorded. The chief business was to decide which firm’s prices for various manures, should be accepted, and after much discussion it was finally decided to ac cept Mr J. J. Craig’s price for bonedust, and that he (Craig) be asked to quote for super, also. .... «, ». - . Mr Hopkins, the Government Bee expert, delivered an address on “Bee culture,” which proved very interesting and instructive. The local footballers have again won the P. K. U» caps this year, having came through the season without a defeat—a good record. The juniors have also won the second grade caps, and deserve every credit for their victory. The ladies of the district will now be looking for a ball to win up the season’s operations, and rightly too, seeing the loyal manner in which they have supported both teams at their various matches. The trees around the Old Hall are being severely dealt with, some being topped and others cut down. It is a great pity that some patches of trees along our roads could not be dealt with in the same drastic manner.

The Council teams are again with us, engaged in carryiug out very necessary repairs on the roads, The Government telegraph gang are busy shifting the poles from the main road and re-erecting them along the railway line. This has long been the request of the local bodies. Why, though, Were the poles ever allowed to be erected light iu the water-table of the station road ? Iu this position they are more dangerous than ever they were, and something should certainly bo done to get these obstructions to traffic removed before an accident occurs.

I think it i? high time the railway authorities took iu'o consideration the urgeut necessity of building a larger goods-shedat our local railway-station, tiie present shed being totally inadequate to deal with present conditions, but more especially will the lack of accommodation be felt, when the flax trade begins to make its presence known.
