SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 1905. TE AROHA’S PROGRESS.
2 his above all—to thine own self be true, A nd it must follow as the night the day Thou canst not then be false to any man Shakespeare.
Evidence of the steady growth of Te Aroha and its surrounding districts is continually being emphathised by the forward turn of events, The fact aloue that a daily bank has long been felt to be a necessity, and that it is now an established institution, points to the fact that the business of the town is increasing at a steady pace, Given a Borough Council bent on carrying on a carefully progressive policy of development, we can, during the next few years, look for a more rapid increase in the inflow of residents from other parts, and thus a corresponding addition to the rateable value of our township. But, fortunately, we do not rely upon municipal administration as a means of attracting either a permanent or a migratory population to the town. The marvellous healing properties of the Hot and Cold Springs, nature’s kindly gifts to the town, have long been renowned, and these, combined with the wonderful invigorating effects of the clear, pure air, and the pleasure to be derived from the various forms of outdoor pastimes, renders Te Aroha a place in which young and old alike may spend an enjoyable an benefleia holiday.
For the lover of nature there is much to admire here: whether he contemplate the lofty mountain, its well-wooded sides carrying all the varied tints of New Zealand bush, or whether it be the picturesque Wajhou River pursuing its winding course between pasture land or swamp on either side, he cannot faff to be struck with the beauty of the scepe before him. Truly he may then exclaim “This is one of the chosen corners of God’s own country.” The continuing good reports from the mines ip adjacent gold-fields give rise to great hopes for the future of To Aroha, and there is no donbt that the ultimate success of local effort? ip fhis direction will give a further welcome impetus to trade generally in this district..
But dairying and agriculture are at present the staple industries, apd though to a little eytept handicapped by the past season being a somewhat unfavourable one, still, reports show that sound and steady business has been done, and that experienced farmers have had very satisfactory results from either branch. The local creameries and factories are now in full swing, and a flourishing sonson is expected. Let ns hope that expectations piay prove to be well-founded, and tlipt; all mpy st are in the general prosperity. 1 " ' ,
