THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 1905. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

2 his above all—to thine own self be true , And it must, follow as the night the day Viou cansi not then be false to any man Shakespeare.

At the Police Court yesterday a “drunk” was fined, or in default twenty-four hours imprisonment. The offender decided to “take it out.”

A couple of months ago, the London Standard put some (pi ati ms to the Agents-Geueral of the various colonies as follows :—l. What opening are therefor such young fellows in the Colony you represent ? When"it came his turn, W. P. Reeves, now our High Commissioner, said : —’‘A young Englishman just leaving school, possessing good health and strength, should not, even if he has a small capital, go to New Zealan 1 without first qualifying himself by a cei tain amount of and experience for the work which he proposes to undertake when he arrives in the Colony The young man who has no profession or trade and no money is not wanted in New Z 'aland and it is no kindness to encouvage him to go there. Most of the best unimpioved land requires clearing, which involyes great labour and expense. A man, therefore, with sufficient capital should buy improved laud.” The moral of this is that we don’t want pioneers. And yet the Government won’t cut down the bush ! In *‘G id’s own country ” the bollocking evidently will have to bo done by the old colonists, fortheirso nsa re crowding ia ' o the towns, and the new-c oners must not bo allowed to hurt thomselvos.
