Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News

TUESDAY, JULY 25 1905.

This above all—to thine own self be true, \nd it must follow as the night the dag Thou cansi not then be false to ang man Shakespeare.

Amongst the various subjects discussed it the meeting of the Piako County Council on Wednesday last, was the vexed one concerning trees upon land adjoining public roads. In this utilitarian age there seems to be great inclination to regard bushes and trees as useless obstructions ; but it should not be forgotten that trees play an important part in tempering the climate of a country, and that every settler who keups a reasonable number of trees standing is assisting to reduce the future cost of the tree-planting -cheme which the Government has recently organised. That trees are a necessity in any country is shown by the ties-planting schemes, not only in New Zealand, but In some countries of North Europe, whore the ruthless felling of timber has gradually caused a marked increase in the severity of • lie climate.

We can oniy hope that the Council will, by asking for the removal of only those trees and branches which are actually an obstruction to the road traffic, endeavour to show their appreciation of the efforts of those who are in reality doing a service both to the country and to the district by preserving these picturesque oases in the monotonous expanse of paddocks and wire fences. We must contiuue to live in hopes for the glorious future, however distant it may seem, when the centre portion of our roads will be in sueh good condition that there'will no longer be any need to ride at the sides, a practice which must, under almost any circumstances, he attended with some risk, especially at night time.
