Piako County Council

The following is the balance of the report of the above meeting : Deputation in Danger.—A letter was read from W. Brumby, Shaftesbury, asking the Council to notify the public that he was not the engineer who supervised the placing of the pipes at the end of the Diagonal Eoad —he was simply the labourer. He regretted to state that his reputation as a tile drainer had been serioush damaged through the public not being aware that he was only the labourer. Had he been otherwise he should certainly not have used 28 pipes when 19 were sufficient. A Bequest.—John Torrens, Waitoa, wrote asking permission to put in a culvert of 12 inch pipes across the main road opposite his property.—On the motion of the chairman seconded by Cr Harrison it was resolved to inform applicant that the Council cannot see its way to grant the request. Taking over a Eoad.—lt was resolved on the motion of Cr Bellamy, to take over from the Waitoa Eoad Board about 35 to 40 chains of Stanley road, between the two county roads.— Cr Larney asked if the road was in good order. —'Cr Bellamy replied in the affirmative. He added that in this respect it was unlike the GordonWaharoa road, receotly taken over from the Matamata Eoad Board.

New Order of Things.—The Valuation Department wrote advising that in future was the intention of the Department to alter the system of checking the rolls. At the end of the year a list will be issued showing what entries are tc be detected from the rolls in possession of local bodies. An additional roll be issued which will show all alterations and additions made during the year. Deposit Returned.—Taking into consideration the circumstances of the case the Council decided to return the deposit on Boss’ contract.

Box Culvert. —Eesolved on the motion of f he Chairman seconded by Cr Bellamy that J Dignan be granted permission to put down a box culvert opposite his premises. The work to be done under the supervision of the county foreman. Purchase of Jacks. —It was resolved that several timber jacks be purchased for the use of the foremen ; also a set of chain harrows.

Approach Warned - —Decided to request the railway authorities to make an approach to the Okoroire station gate. Use of Council Chambers.—The Chairman moved that the Wai >a Eoad Board be allowed the use of the Council Chambers for its next three meetings.—Seconded by Cr Harrison and carried. District Boundaries. —The boundaries of the northern and southern districts were defined and’agreed upon. Price of Timber.—Cr Keeley took exception to the price charged fur rimu, 17s per 100, by the South Auckland Sawmillers Association. He said that the best dressed timber could be got for that price.- Decided that the clerk write and enquire if some clerical error had not keen made in the account.

A Contractor Fined. —A long ex placatory letter was received from A. Forrest, contractor for building a bridge at Matamaohojwhich the foreman adversely reported on at the last meeting. He (Forrest) contended that square holes sunk into the timber to let in the head of the bolts, was often done in bridge work. He said that the plans and specifications (drawn up by the late ’foreman) were so bad that it was ahnoit impossible to work by them, —The chairman said Forrest had had plenty of time to do the work properly. Mistakes made in the construction of a bridge often led to its destruction —Cr Harrison said the foreman was quite right in bring ing the matter before the Council.— Cr Larney ; what is the use of having a foreman unless we uph >LI him.—Cr Gavin said that the foreman had dene his duty. He moved that after hearing the explanation Forrest be fined the sum of £1 as a 'protest against his action in not carrying out the contract according to the specifications,—The chairman seconded, and on being put the motion was carried,—Mr Forrest expressed himself as satisfied with the decision.

Poplar Bridge —ln connection with draining in the vicinity of this bridge (near Annandale) it was resolved that Cr Bellamy and Larney inspect the work and report on same at the next meeting, Clarkin’s Contract.—Advise was ieceived from the Council’s! solicitor 'Mr Swarbrick) to the effect that Clarkin had no legal claim against the Council. —It was resolved that the contractor’s solicitors (Messrs Devore and Martin) be written to to this effect, Insurance, —It was resolved on the motion of the chairman that the New Zealand Accident Insursnce Company be given the Council’s insurance,
