Piako County Council
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers, MorrinsviU©, yesterday, when there'were present: Councillors Chepmell (chairman), N. A. Larney, M. Harrison, Jno McGaw, Thos Gavin, M. KeelSy, T Bellamy, and W Bing. Minutes read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence dealt with. Montague’s Contract, Stanley Cut-ting.—-Or McCaw reported as follows “I visiteithis work to-day, and find
that good progress is being made with the fi ing up of the wash-out, and two I weeks more should see it nearly finished
\ As regards improving the grade on cutting next to Stanley landing, after thoroughly examining it, I came to the conclusion that there could not be much done to ease the grade and would recommend leaving it alone in the meantime: If there is any money to spend, it wo rid be more advantage- % ousty spent in reducing the grade of ; ,y,tbe cutting situated to the north of the Stanley Cutting, and nearer to the Gordon-Waihou road.” Waharqa-Gordon Boad.— A petition was received from some' twenty eight Waharoa ratepayers drawing attention to the present impassable, state of a certain, part of -the yWaharpa-Gordon road, aihd urging that it be fascined at once. Foremen’s Beports. —G. Mahood, foreman of the northern district, reported completion of Ten Mile Bridge, and repairs to Cambridge Gorge road. The unfavourable state of the weather has hindered work in some parts. - That carting of chaff by Assets Board Kon Okoroire-Te Papa road is doing great damage to the recently sanded road. " The report also states that
efforts i will be made to attend to . dangerous places and water-holes as they occur. The general condition of the roads is good for the time of year. An Application.—On behalf of the Waihou Domain Board, the secretary wrote making application for permis aion to‘plant trees on the balf-chain of ground facing the road along the Board’s Becreation ground near the Te Aroba railway bridge.—The Council could not see its way to grant the request, being strongly opposed to trees growing alongside of roads. A Denial.—ln response to a letter from the clerk Mr T McGlo>'n, wrote a somewhat lenghy letter to the Council (already published in these columns) with reference to an alleged incorrect report in the -News. The letter criticised the work of the Council. The letter was received. Tenders.—lf was mentioned that during the interim J Hanks’ tender had been accepted for work on the Diagonal Boad, and SL Burge’s tender Is 2d per chain cleaning drain on the Waihou Tirau Boad. Slaughter house Licenses —P. A. Swney applied for slaughter house license for Section 30. Block 16, Waitoa.—Cr Bellamy said he had inspected the site and approved of same'—Besolved to forward the application in the usual way. ; - Certificates wer>> received for licenses ■for F. Bose. J. T. J. Stanley, O’Meagher Bros, L. B. Warren, J. Rutherford* P. M. Pohlen, D. Scelly, and G Alley. Pipes Wanted,—The secretary of the Manawaru School committee (H. Hewin, wrote asking the Council put in aet of pipes in the County drain at the junction of Stanley and Diagonal road. Also that permission be given to put in a set of pipes in the outfall drain' to form a crossing to the school grounds.—On the motion of Cr Gavin it was agreed the pipes be put in. Withdrawal of grants,— Alf. Coad and John Carrol intimated that as the Council had failed to do anything towards cleaning out drains along the Gordon-Waharoa road, they withdiaw their promised subscriptions, A Protest.—W Brumby protested
against the sum of fire shillings being , docked off. Jus account.
