It must be exceedingly gratifying to sheep farmers that the prices of wool at the sales at London show a further advance on the high values obtained

at the previous series. The rise is accompanied by an increase ia the

Wool Sales.

quantity of wool exported, which, during the twelve months ended J une 30th, reached 337,209 bales, as compared with 376,742 bales in the preceding twelve months. These figures are a long way short of the 428,768 bales exported during the 1902-3 season, but the fact that there is an in* | crease now dispels the anxiety that was felt a year ago, that the colony was going backwards in the matter of wool production. The value of the wool exports for the past season will, notwithstanding the lighter bulk, be two millions sterling greater than three years ago- It cannot be expected that the present high prices will be maintained much longer, for Australian merino wool will be exported in much greater quantities next year, and come into competition with our coarser wools, and the near termination of the war in the Far East will bring about some cessation of demand. Yet it may be hoped that America will continue to be required to import largely and thus furnish a profitable outlet. In any case;there is likely to be a large surplus" beyond advances on. the wool gold at the London sales this week to be distributed among the growers in the colony,
