PRESERVATION OF TIMBER.
' The Powell Wood Process has been designed for the seasoning and preser vation of timber. It is also said to improve the appearance of wood used foi*, decorative purposes. The timber l is first boiled in a compound of sarcharine solution, whereby the latent air is driven out, and the albumen of the sap coagulated. It is then allowed to cool in the solution until it is sufficiently impregnated, when it is died at a high temperature. As the plant is simple, the solution cheap, and the required labour small the cost of the whole process is low. comparing favourably in this respect other reasoning methods. Every kind of timber, including railway sleepers, and { avement blocks, can be treated by the process, and one of its greatest advantages is that newly felled trees can be prepared for use as soon as they are cut down. The plant used includes a long cylinder, storage tanks for holding various qualities of liquors corresponding to the class of timber to be treated, and a series of pipes with their valves coo necting the two. Then there are the drying chambers, heated by a Blackman’s stove, and having fans forcing the air through the ducts. A large horizontal eogine and Lancashire boiler supply the necessary power for driving funs. etc. This process is controlled by the Powell Wood-Process Syndicate, Limited, of 20 Temple 'Bar House.--, Loudon, E.O.
