Sir Joseph Ward evidently intends to make the most of the Tourist De partment. He said last week that he was having a set of The Tourist photographs of New Department Zealand scenery taken for advertising purposes. We would suggest (says the Posf) that the pho ographs in question would prove raor n effective if they were carefully coloured like those used for a similar purpose some years ago by Mr Richard Dainjree, then AgentGeneral foi\ Queensland. The tourist traffic of this colony is, we feal confident. capable of .great development, and in these days judicious and con stant ’advertisement i- ahsolutely necessary if the' ecOpie beauties of this fair land arPjfPjbakopJ before the travelling piibt'e -Yf America and the Old W-rld. Our natural scenery is m valuable asoet, and there is no valid reason against our turning it to adv> ntage much in the same wav as th Swiss have done theirs. We have, fortunately, raanv more resources than the "little European Common-
wen Ith. but tint would not justify ius in neglecting to follow its example' iu this respect, trii* Joseph Ward is not likely to show any lack of energy in the working of the Department. The only danger is that he may gite full vent to his ideas without paying due regard to economy. The country- will not grudge any necessary expenditure, but it naturally expects the outlay to be proportionate to the estimated return. So far the cost of the Department does not appear to have Tbeen exhorbitant, and we trust that for the future aLo such economy as is consistent with effectiveness will bo duly observed.
