Another Accident at Waihi

AN EXPLOSION OE GELIGNITE. t *MINER SHOCKINGLY INJURED. Waihi, December 3. A terrible accident" occurred at the No. 1 shaft between 5 and 6 o’clock this evening, when a man named Chas. Marshall was shockingly mutilated by a. gelignite explosion. He and hi* mate - McMullen had only shortly before gone on afternoon shift, and while his mate was attending to th« windless at M the top of the winze, Marshall below was locating the position for holes. Suddenly his mate at the windlass heard a loud explosion and going below afterwards found Marshall lying insensible. He was brought to suiface and conveyed to Nurse Gilmour’s. The extent of the injuries, so far as can be ascertained at the, time of wiring, are —arm terribly shattered, eye practically torn out, while the other is shockingly lacerated, anda'deep wound on his hip and side. He is lying in a critical condition. Marshall and McMullen were on the contract in the eastern end of the Martha lode at the No. A level. The previous shift, it is snfd, hard left one- 1 hole of three unexploded and it issupposed chat Marshall was tamping' this particular hole when the explosion ■occured.
