MAFEKING BELIEVED ABLE TO HOLD OUT FOR WEEKS. BOERS IN BASUTOLAND. AN ENGAGEMENT IMMINENT. London, March 22. Lord Methuen has secured an important crossing east of Fourteen Streams. The new punt is in readiness and reinforcements are hurried forward with a view to crossing and outflanking the Boers. There are indications that Mafeking can hold out for- three weeks. A battle is imminent near Maseru, in Basutoland. Joubert has resumed the supreme command at Kroon stad* The Knight Templar with the New Zealand contingent has been sent to Capetown to join Sir Frederick Carrington’s new force for the protection of Rhodesia*
General Woodgate has died of wounds received at Spionkop. It has been, decided to include the families of colonial officers in the fund being raised for the relief of officers’ families. The Duchess of York has been appointed president of the committee to control the New Zealand portion of the fund* London, March 25. It is affirmed that a committee of burghers at Kroonstad have assumed the Government and deposed Steyn. Lord Roberts reports that four officers rode without escort, except by a trooper, eight, miles beyond theo imp on the Modder River on the 23rd. The Boers fired, killing the Hon. E. Lygon, of the Grenadier Guards, brother of Earl Beauchamp, and seriously wounding [Lieut. - Colonel Crabbe and Lieut. Trotter, of the Grendiers; also, Lieut.-Colonel Codrington, of the Coldstreams. There is. great concentration nf Boer forces with enormous supplies at Kroonstad. The rebels are- entrenched between Kenhardt and Van Wyk’s Viei. Trooper Handing and Private E. Smith, of the New Zealanders, are ; seriously ill at the Cape; i Lord Kitchener, having completed successful operations against the rebels in the north-western part of the Capo Colony has rejoined Lord Roberts at Bloemfontein* Lord Roberts reports that the country is becoming settled. The people are’ tlio 'Gdvantages offered to them under British ; rule and are selling supplies to the conquerors*
