(By Central). A meeting was held in the new schoolhouse on the 19th inst., to consider matters of interest relating- to the welfare of the district. Mr M. Cronin was voted to the chair, and which he filled in a most capable manner. He said he felt it a great honor to be the first Chairman of the new School < ommitteo of Manawaru, from the that r th£& initiation of a school in a new district added many advantages to the community, and one was the education of the children, which could not be overlooked. He then went on to show that the meeting had been convened by Mr Whitburn, on behalf of the settlers of Manawaru, and that he (the chairman), though coinparalively speaking, a new arrival amongst them, quite endorsed the need of such a meeting. The question of opening the new school was first discussed, aud a c -m to carry out the of the meeting, which is to be ws-jn the form of a picnic, jointly with the creamery, a social and dance to be ' held in the evening. The question of a ceremony in connection with the opening of the new biidge between Shatesbury and Manawaru was then discussed, but as an ■uncertainty exists as to the exact date on which the bridge will be completed, this matter was allowed to stand in abeyance for the present. It was decided to petition the Waitoa Road Board to open up for immediate use the dividing road, leading from Mr Bemrose’s house, on the main road through Mr Knight’s property, aud also that of the settlers further up. Tfchis work will prove a great convenience to the settlers, and it will also enable about a score of children to have access to the new school. Furthermore, it will greatly shot-ten the distance to the local creamery, thus bring the settlers market lor their milk nearer home. I hope to be in a position to give your further particulars re bridge opening ceremony in the course of a few weeks.
