House Burned’ ’Down.

About two o’clock on Sunday morning a five-roomed cottage, situated on the VVaihou road, „ belonging to Mr R Brenan, was destroyed by fire. It appears that Mrs Brenan was awakened' by a feeling of suffocation, and found the room full of smoke, she at once tried to get into the children’s room but was, unable to find the door, being in a half dazedcondition, she succeeded however in reaching the outer door, and getting- into the fresh air immediately recovered, Mrs Brenan then forced open the window of the children’s- room and succeeded in getting them out safely. The origin of the fire is unknown, hut is supposed to be caused by a defective chimney. About five o’clock on Saturday evening the chimney took fire, but was put out by Mr Brenan’s son without any damage being dbne. Mrs Brenan, on returnning from t-lie Ngaruawaliia regatta,at 10.30, lit a fire and had some refreshment, when she retired tLe fire was out and all oeenied safe. Mr McGuirk was the first to arrive on the scene,, and a little later Mr Thomas, both gentlemen these rendering valuable assistance and doing ail in their power to assist Mrs Brenan. Mr Brenan not being at home at the time. The building was insured in the National for £80; the furniture and effects being insured for £70..
