THE THEATROPHONE.
TO-NIGHT. I tie evening: our readers will have an opportunity of hearing- the Theatrophono, Edison’s latest- development. Commenting on Mr Whitehouse’s Opera House season in Auckland, the Hera 1 cl says :
“In the Opera House last'night Mr A. H. Whitehouse had a successful opening performance with his theatre* phone and kinematograph entertainment. The theatrophone is simply an improved and enlarged phonograph specially adapted'for large buildings, and the selections given en the new instrument last night were sufficient proof that nothing so well adopted for public entertainments has vet been exhibited in Auckland. The instru ment is distinctly heard all ovrrthe building, the words of the various solos being easily followed in every ins'ance while in the orchestral pieces it sends forth a strong volume of sounl, tho effect being as nearly as possible the same as if the orchestra were in the building. The sol., ‘ The Heart Bowed D w a,’was loudly applauded, and other items, which drew tho special approval of the audience was a banjo solo, vocal trio from “ Pinafore,'’ and a comic song in Maori, £■ d o rod by capital imitation. l ? of-birds. Tho programme also includes eo net so'o by Mr Treversi, Greymouth ; vocal q-*a* - '- etteß and orchestral marches. Til ? kinematograoh entertainment is oXcoedir.gly good, the views, including two taken at the departure of tho second New Zealand contingent foS >uth Africa, the opening of Auok land "Exhibition, Regatta Day in Auckland, TJlnn winning the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie, and a large number of comic views. Mr G. M. Reid sang, “ Our Rons Across the Sea,” and had to rospond to an oneoro for “The Absent-minded Beggar,” tlie sum of 12s Id for the patriotic fund hoing thrown on the stage during the singing of the ballad". Mr A. Bo'ter sang “Break the Nows to Mother.” ” A b ; g crowd is anticipated at the' entertainment to-night.
