MANGAITI NOTES.

During the past few this district has been visited by a series of swamp and other fires. Ohe blaze, which originated near the railway lino, spread for miles, old considerable di imago to fencing, etc. Our flaxmill-—at least Johnson’s—is humming along, and putting ‘hrough a large quantity of flax. The fibre turned out at this mill is of excellent quality. The mill, which is under-the supervision of Mr Ja?..Johnson, employs about' 29**hand8, and is kept constantly goingAn untenanted shanty, situated'om the eastern;side of the seti lament, was burned to the ground the other evening. It is supposed a 1 passing tramp made it his rendezvous, and* irn the course of events mislaid some embers or a lighted 1 match. The punt across the river,- connecting this township with Lower Waitoa,. iB-giving general satisfaction, and is a source of great convenience to settlers on both sides of the river.
Several buildings are spoken of as likely to be erected in the neighbourhood shortly. This is indeed a Healthy sign of prosperity.-
