WAR ITEMS.
Sergeant HefSord and Privates Fahey, Brodrick, and Asquith of Ohinemuri Rifles, No. 3 ( Waihi corps), have offered their services for the fourth contingent. Owing to two men of the Shropshire regiment not giving the password correctly, they were shot dead by a comrade on sentry at Modder River. The sentry went mad. Opotiki has sent six representative® to the Rough Riders camp, of whom—John Pile 25 (sft 9iu), W. Withers 31 (6ft lin),.and Kennedy Roes 23 (6ft lin)— will find their own horses. These three were accepted at once.
After the second contingent had left Albany the Premier informed Lord Roberts, giving the number oi * officers and men, and informing hitn that they should arrive at Durban on the 20th to await orders. He has received the following reply from Lord Roberts : “ Modder River, February 11. Many, thanks for your telegram. I look forward with great pleasure to the er ival of the second contingent from New Zealand. They will be a Valuable and welcomo addition to our forces.—• Robert?.” i
