On Monday evening, in the Wesleyan Church, quin a <rc-t was aff rded tho.-e present, by the Rev C. He was engaged cutting timber in the bush, when by some means tho axe slipped, and coming down with full force ou tho right foot, almost severed the whole of the toes. The poor fellow was alone at the time, and, notwithstanding his agony, he walked a mile in the bush, caught his horse, and rode bare-backed to Waitekauri, where the foot was bandaged. . Carlson was then taken to Waihi, and the injury attended to by Dr Forbes, and the patient is now doing as well as can be expected. Miss Clara Margaret Abercrombie, aged 24, has disappeared from the resdenco of his parents, who keep a book depot in Karangahape Road. It appears that sho left her home to go to Beo Dr Wine, at 8.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, since which hour sho has not been seen. On enquiry at Dr Wine’s residence, it was found that she had never-been there. Miss Abercrombie has been very despondent of late, and fretting a good deal, but could give no reason to her parents wli}' she should do so. A note has been found in her Bible in tho following terms :— 1 Good-bye. T don’t think I was ever converted ’ Her parents are very respectable people, and are greatly distressed at their daughter’s disappearance.- It appears that sho had influenza recently, and it is feared that it may have affected her mind.
