(From own Correspondent.) N.Z. SECOND CONTINGENT. Wellington, Yesterday. On this trip the Waiwera will call first at Durban* from wlich' it is supposed that the second contingent may be at f aehed to General Bailer’s army. The customs authorities estimate that 11,960 persons were on board the Union Co.’s steamers on the occasion of the departure of the second contingent. GARDEN PARTY. Christchurch, Yesterday. Mrs Stu lholmes’ garden party in aid of the War Fund, was very successful, over 2000 being present. The fete resulted iu £3OO being raised for the funds. UNFORTUNATE MISHAP. Auckland, Yesterday. The unfortunate mishap which occurred while repairing the boilers at the pumping station, western springs, on Wednesday last, has resulted in the death of one of the victims, Mr S. Martin, boilermaker, who passed away at the hospital at 1.25 this afternoon ; as a result of the burns he received.
