TE AROHA AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the above society was held in the Domain Buildings on Saturday evining last. There were present: —The President (Mr W. H. Herries, M.H.R.) in the chair, Messrs Hirst, Lavery, Jas. Brown, T. Stanley, A. W. Edwards, Hill, Bossons, East, Borne, Bowler (2), * Hetherington, Jackson, Wright, Wallace, Parr, Batt, McSweeney, Cribb and Mr F. Strange, secretary. Minutes of previous and special meetings read and confirmed. Spraying Orchards :—A circular was received fronfi Secretary Agricultural Department, asking if any orchards in this district were available for spraying for exprimeutal purposes, Mr Bossons expressed his willing ness to allow the use of his orchard, if large enough for,the purpose. Resolved on. the motion of Mr Bowler, seconded by Mr Hirst, that the Secretary receive offers of orchards for experimental purposes. , Tent-From Mr Le Roy forwarding charges for use of tent, viz., £.2 17s for first day,, and, 15s for extra day.' ' * - • ./ Decided.on motion of Mr Stanley, seconded by Mr Wright, that a larger tent than last year be obtained, and that tent .be fdr exhibition.
..Catalogues :—Mr Hill moved and Mr Hirst secondod; that catalogues of stock only .be printed. Carried. •• ■" Privileges :—lt was decided to sell privileges, " consisting of Publican’s Booth, Refreshment Booth and Catalogues, by auction. The Secretary to arrange re auctioneer, to be sold not later than Saturday, 20th inst. Mr Hetherington moved that" the gates be retained by Society, Mr Bowler seconded. Carried. Train :—Resolved Oft Mr Bowler’s motion, seconded by; Mr Hetherington, that Secretary write to District Manager, Railway Department, asking him to delay the Thames train till 7 o’clock, on'Show Day. Horse Paddock i—Mr Hirst thought that some convenience should be provided for horses belonging to people attending the Show, which would also prove a source of revenue to the Society, and offered the use of a paddock (dose to the Show ground for the purpose. : The Chairman, was of opinion that horses or buggies should not be allowed on the Show ground. Mr Edwards moved that Mr Hirst’s offer be accepted, and that a charge of Is be made, horses, not to be allowed on. circle. Mr Bowler seconded.
Mr Borrie thought that no charge should be made.
Mr Brown moved that the Society provide paddocking accommodation for horses and buggies, free of charge. Mr Hirst pointed out that the Society was in need of all the money they* coul& possibly Obtain-, and th ere was no compulsion about the use of the paddock. Mr Bowler thought that there should be a distinction made between visitors and exhibitors, and that exhibitors have use of paddock free. Mr Stanley also spoke in favor of making a distinction between visitors and exhibitors.
The Chairman now put Mr Edwards’ motion, and on a show of hands, was declared lost.
Mr Wallace proposed that a portion of Show ground be provided for the use of exhibitors and others, free of charge ; also a paddock for those who wish to use it at a charge of Is. Mr Bowler seconded and it was carried. • Band :—Resolved on mo'.ion of Mr Hirst, seconded by Mr East, that Band bo engaged to play on Day of Show, and Mr Hill and Secretary make necessary arrangements, Band to consist of not less than ten instruments.
Opening of Show in the Evening : Mr Bowler thought that the Show should not be opened in the evening and moved to thut effect.
Mr Brown proposed that the Show be opened in the evening from 7 till 10 o’clock. Mr Edwards seconded. Carried.'
Lighting Tent:—Mr Hirst moved and Mr Edwards seconded, that Secretary write to Mr Wilkinson, Cambridge, asking if he will provide accetylone gas to light tent, the arrangements to be left in the hands of Messrs Wright, Hill, Secretary and m -vcr. Carried.
. Sale of Produce, etclt was res' 'lvotl on motion of .Mr Bossons, soeondod by Mr Hill, that the sale of produce, etc., on evening of Show be discontinued. Treatlos : Resolved that Messrs Hirst and Wright bo appointed to interview Mr B.dno as to how many trestles woro destroyed, and to make arrhngoraonts for procuring now ones. Exhibit Cards : Resolved that writing on exhibit cards, showing names of exhibitor, exhibit and prize, be made in ink. Stewards : The following . were elected stewards of the various classes : —Pot plants and cut flowers, Messrs Hirst and East; fruit, Messrs Stanley and Wright ; vegetables and field produce, Messrs E. Bowler and Borrie; dairy produce and poultry, Messrs Batt and Bossons ; needlework and cookery, Misses B. Lavery and Wild; stock, driving, and leaping matches, Messrs Jackson, T. Bell imy, W. Hetlierington, F. Rowe, Brown, Edwards, Hinton, A. Bowler, Pilling, Hanks, and J. Rowe; sundries,.Messrs A. J; Farmer and Wallaee. Milk-testing :—Resolved that Mr Whitburn be asked to test milk. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
