The latest -cables concerning tlie struggle for supremacy at present raging in tho Transvaal aie of a somewhat alarming nature. What was at first considered by many as a fracas of but short duration, is rapidly fanning itself into prominence throughout tho woi’ld. Never before in the history of England has she been calffid upon to place an array of such strength of numbers in tho field to overcome her enemies. In many respects, however, Britain’s unpreparedness for the present struggle is only too easily seen. Tim cry is being raised at Home at the deadlock which the insufficiency of the? British forces in the South Africa brought about. The Times and Daily News remind Mr Balfour, of the answer given to the Australian Government’s offers of con'ingents at the outset of the war, that Britain was prepared, and that tho colonies should send unmounted troops. Tho Standard emphasises the statements regarding the ani-calculafcmns in regard to the war, and warns the G ivernrnent that energy and forethought are prerequisites to their regaining public confidence.
