Transvaal War Fund.

MEETINGS IN TE AROHA. ARRANGEMENTS FOR RAISING MONEY. A meeting of the committee, elected to make arrangements for raising a local Transvaal War Fund, was held in the Domain office last night, when there were present: —• His Worship tho Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs Mills, Hirst, Gilchrist, Pavitt, CJrombie, McGregor, and Hill.

Mr Gilchrist was elected treasurer, and Mr Ilill secretary. Tho general principle of having, as one of the means for raising money, an open-air fete in the Domain was agreed upon, and Mr McGregor was deputed to arrange the musical portion of tho programme, while Mr Crombio undertook tho arrangement of the decorations. It is intended to erect a large platform against the slope in front of the new bath house on which the school children will be assembled, and also a lai’ge adult chorus assisted by the band, in order to supply tho choruses to the various solos in an effective manner. A leading feature will be the illumination of the Domain grounds by Chinese lanterns, and if all can be carried out as planner], an exceedingly effective display should result. The secretary was directed to write to the chairmen of the school committees at Morrinsville, Waihou, Te Aroha West, Waharoa, Waiorongomai, and Gordon enlisting their cooperation in canvassing thoir respective districts for subscriptions to the fund. Considerable enthusiasm was displayed at the meeting, and it is ex pocted that a fund will be raisod which will be alike of material assistance to tho general fund and creditable to the district. With a view to enlisting the cooperation of the band and the volunteers, the secretary was instructed to wri'o t<> both theso organisations asking them each to send a representative to act on tho committee. It was agreed to ask tho various clergy men in tho town to join tho committee, and also to add tho names of Messrs W. 11. Wright and J. G. White. As a certain amount of advertising and printing will be necessary to the success of tho project, it was decided to write to tho proprietor of tho Te Aroha News, asking if he would kindly allow tho advertising to be done gratis. A lady c>r respondent writes:—At tho late patriotic mooting a committee was appointed, but contrary to the custom elsewhere no money (according to the report) was promised in the room. A promenade concert was proposed, but in a matter of this sort the blood of the best of the land is worthy of something different from that. If the eight gentlemen who were elected as the Committee will each give £5, I will give £lO, making £SO in all as the contribution from Te Aroha.
