(From own Correspondent.) CRUELTY TO HORSES. Auckland, Last night. The Inspector of the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals warned a jockey about using his spurs unduly. A NARROW ESCAPE. Mr Dawson, seed merchant, of Auckland, had a narrow escape from drowning on the Waitekauri, West Coast. A breaker swept him off the rock on which he was sitting, on to the beach, and he was carried by the backwa-h to and fro between a rocky islet and the mainland. Some young men who were fishing exhorted him to leTve go, and he being swept towards the mainland, they succeeded, after three attempts, in throwing a fishing line to him and rescuing him. THE BANKRUPT DALEY. The Official Assignee, Mr John Lawson, accompanied by Mr Jabez Bunting and his solicitor, proceeded to Mount Eden goal for the purpose of examining upon oath Charles Grant Daley. In consequence of the return of the debtor, the examination of other witnesses was deferred for the present, as Daley’s statement may furnish information that in his abs nee would have had to be obtained elsewhere. It will take some time to ascertain the actual position of the estate. One auctioneer notified Mr Lawson he holds £3OO on account of goods sold for Daley. THE CABINET.

DEATH OF MR. T. J. PARKER. Npws has been received here of the death, at Melbourne, of Thomas Jas. Parker, one of the founders of Huddart, Parker and Co., and a well known personage in shipping circles. GOLD RETURNS The gold yield of the colony for the past year totalled 854,0900 z, being an increase over the previous year of 17,242 oz. This is the largest yield for the colony for the past 17 years. FIRE FIEND. Napier, Yesterday. The Ardluna homestead owned by Mr H. Abbott, was totally destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The fire originated in the storeroom, but the cause is not known. Practically nothing was saved.

SHOCKING ACCIDENT. Palmerston North, Yesterday. A shocking accident occurred in the Pitzherbert district last evening, resulting in the death of a youth named Archie Cameron. A party of about 16 young people were proceeding from Palmerston to the residence of a settler in the Pitzherbert district to spend the evening, and when four miles from town the brake, while descending a sharp hill, was carried over the side and down iuto a steep gully through one of the horses swerving. The drop was fully 30 feet and it was marvellous how so many escaped being killed. SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, Yesterday. George Galloway, 60 years of age, a resident of Momington, died suddenly. Ho was found sitting on tho ground with his back against a fence. wateiThctpply. Paeroa, Yosterday. Mr Pelham, tho Government waterworks onginoor, to-day visited Maokaytown, accompanied by Mr Armstrong, ci’y onginoor, in order to inspeot and report upon tho application for a Government grant towards providing for a supply of water for Mackaytown township, which is rapidly being occupied by minora from Korangahako.
