STRANGE GOLD STORY.
A STORY' of the buried treasure in the sea is published by the Cape papers. Accordir.g to the ‘ Mail’ it appears that. a syndicate engaged in an illicit gold amalgam traffic in Johannesburg, were in. the habit of recovering the gold by means of retorts near Delagoa Bay. _ They purchased an old ship, lined its inside with geld ingots to the value of nearly a quarter ,of & million,, and sailed away surreptitiously. The vessel, however, became waterlogged and ran on a reef near the mouth of the Tugela river, where she now lies five fathoms deep. A syndicate formed to- recover the lost treasure held similar ill-luck. Owing to the treacherous surf and currents their boats were swamped and the occupants were drowned. The scene of the wreck is being watched by the Zulu police for the purpose of securing a royalty on the treasure if recovered.
