PAEROA MARKET.

Messrs Mackay and Pratt, auctioneers, report as follows on their Ohinemuri markets for the week ending January 4th, 1900 Quite a number ~f entries of fruit were received for this auction, and there |still seems to be a good demand in all classes. Owing to the Christmas holidays, we did not hold our usual auction of furniture, so have nothing to report in this line. The “ following prices were obtained for fruit:—Apples 2d, l|d, ljd, and ljd per lb; apricots made 4d, 3Jd,‘ and 2sd per lb; cherries brought 4d per lb ; peaches 3d, and 2d per lb; plums 3d and 2£d per lb; new potatoes sold at 4s per cwt. Property sales are still hard to effect, and lately there has not been a great demand for houses.

NZ. LOAN & MERCANTILE AGENCY CO. (LTD.) January 5, 1900. Owing to the holidays, there was no hide and skin sale last week, the sale this week being held on Thursday, when we offered a catalogue consisting of 862 hides, 800 sheep skins, 89 packages wool, and nine packages tallow. We quote as follows: — Hides: Prime stout ox, s£d to 6£d ; stout, 5d to s£d; light and medium, 4Jd to sd; cow, 4|d to 4£d; kip, 4d to 4£d ; calf, od to 6d; stags, 3d to 3*d. Sheepskins: Large, 4s 9d to 5s 9d; pelts, Is 5d to Is 9d; lamb skins, Is 3d to 2« 3d.

Wool (in bags, etc.): Halfbred, 7d to B£d ; crossbred, 5Jd to 6£d ; cotts, 5d to ssd ; pieces, 3JI to sd; dead, 3£d to 6d; locks, lid to 2|d. For our sale on the 16th instant wool is arriving very freely, ail'd we anticipate offering a large and representative catalogue of about 2000 bales. Tallow: Best rendered, nominal, 20s to 21s 6d; fair and medium, 17s to 19s. Horsehair: Best tail, Is 4d to Is s£d per lb ; tails, 2s per doz. Maize: As there have been no shipments made to Sydney during the last two weeks, the supply has been considerably beyond demand, ank stocks have accumulated; 2s 6d on wharf is nominally the quotation. Oats are still firm at 2s 2d and 2s 3d for ‘C’ and ‘ B* grades. Potatoes : Market is heavily stocked with a poor quality, which are-worth £2 to £3 per ton; best are worth £4. Chaff is easy at £2 at rail. Cheese and butter: No alteration in price.
