Amount of People killed Yearly by Snakes
A 1 together'alfout 20,000 persons die - each year in India from bites of various snakes. Mortality of this magnitude is a terrible thing, though it must be remembered that it is distributed among a population four times as larr as that of the United States, casualties are confined almost jf y to the poorer and more ig^ r *?nfc natives,.who habitually go ab/sJ&i*bare feet. For although''creaL like the hamadryas and the cchis occasionally anxious for a'”hgg|* general rule a snake will remain q until it is disturbed. The consequc is that people who wear boots are hardly ever bitten. This is not so much because of the protection of the leather as on Account of the noise made by a b upon the ground, which warns thh snake to get .out of the way. The ordinary native in bare feet makes hardly any sound, and is consequently very liable to surprise a -snake in the path.
