Shooting Competition.

LINNET ILLUMINATED WORK.

The first competition for the Linuett Illuminated Work took place yesterday afternoon on the ground adjacent to the Tui trestles. Contrary to expectation, the number of competitors was small,, only some half-a-dozen putting in aii appearance. The wind* was blowing half a gale during the contest, consequently the majority of the scoring was poor. ~ The winner turned up in Sergt Salmon, who pat on 11 hits out of 15 shots, the runner up being Vol, H. Hirst, who also scored the same number of hits, but managed to pluce some of his shots high, thus reducing their value. The conditions were fifteen shots, ten individual (to be fired within 2mins.), and five volleys at an unknown range. Hits on lower half of target to count three; and on upper one point. Competitors judging the correct distance to be awarded 5 points; witjhin 25yds 3 points; within 50yds 2 points ; within 100yds 1 point. Below are the scores:—
