ECHOES FROM EUROPE.
Particulars have been received in. Washington from Admiral Sampson of the bombardment of the forts at Santiago do Cuba on Monday last. The attack was made during a dense fog, The American vessels were drawn up into two lines. They poured a torrent of shells into the shore batteries, which, after a short and ineffective fire, were speedily silenced. The at tacking vessels suffered no damagoj The Spanish squadron under Admira Cerveras is not motioned. If it is at Santiago it took no part in the engagement. News from Manila states that the rebels surround the town, and that fierce fighting with the Spaniards is of daily occurrence. Admiral Dewey is using his influence to restrain the insurgents from making a final assault on the city until the arrival of the American troops, fearing that atrocities would be perpetrated by the rebels upon the inhabitants. The British Government are said to be making large purchases of horses in England for military services in South Africa. The House of Commons has sanctioned an Indian loan of <£10,000,000.
