CORRESPONDENCE

Under no circumstances whatever is the Editor responsible for matter contained ‘ in correspondence ]

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Allow me to draw your attention to the suuidal policy of th. 9 Government in theis abandonment of Thompson’s Track, for such I conclude is their intention (in ordering all tools and plant to be,sent to Paeroa. To show how indepenisble is their conduct I will state a.few facts; No less th an five and a half miles on -tbe Katikati' side is fit for wheel traffic, whilst four miles on the other side is also completed, a total of nine and a half miles, leaving only four and a half (miles to be completed. Since of October not a solitary person has been employed on the ten miles of bush road on the track. When I went through last week to collect the tools I had to dismount at over fourteen trees and two small bridges which had fallen in. Unless something is done speedily all the money spent upon the road will be thrown away, through not having water-tables aud culverts cleaned out, and trees and slips removed. As an instance how useful the track had become, about 400 head of fat cattle have passed through from Tauranga, with more to follow if the track is passable iu time. It behaves the County Councils and Road Boards on both sides of the ranges to bestir themselves, as the track is a great feeder for the railways, and a boon of incalculable value to the district. Let me hope your influential paper will aid us iu reminding the Governmsmfc of the drffy they owe to, the Piako, Waikrtto and Bay of Plenty districts. Agitatioa and the aid of a powerful press will accomplish what singlehanded we can never obtain.—l am, etc., Wm. J. Andrews. Katikati, May 30th, 1898.
