Mining Notes.

A corrected return of the value of bullion drawn from the Waihi mine for the year ending December - 31, 1897, ‘has just been received from London. The value is £144,040,* or £748 above the estimate made at the mine, and £6719 more than the value of the 1896 bullion. The corrected Waitekauri return shows the value of the 1897 bullion to be £52,008, as compared with L 22.208 for 1896, and L 11,273 for 1895. The Crown mine return for the month is L3OBI from 1667 tons ore. News from Wellington states that the Premier and the Minister of Mines have inspected a new patent goldsaving apparatus invented? by a Mr Heiden. It deals particularly with tailings and black sand, passing over quicksilver and driven by a dynamo, carrying out the electrolysis process. During the quarter ended March 31, 1897, the quantity of gold entered for duty for.exportatxon from New Zealand was 69,4680 z, valued at L 271,810. Of this amount Auckland contributed 29,4C50z. valued at LM0.872 ; Marlborough, 160 oz, valued atL595; West Coast, 25,2070 z, valued at L 100,829 : and Otago, 14,6960 z, valued at L59,512. For the quarter ended „ 31st March, 1797 the quantity was 61,621 oz,* valued at L 275,816. From April Ist, 1897, to March 31st, 1898, the quantity entered for exportation was 15,635.0200zs ef the value of L 53,644444 sterling A RECORD RETURN. The return of the Waihi Company for the past month is a record one. A total of 6690 tons of ore was treated for bullion valued at L 22,852.
