REPORT ON IHE MAINE DISASTER. Washington, March 25. The report on the Maine disaster has been received at Washington, and the Cabinet is now considering it President McKinley is striving to 1 suppress the war party in the U States. America is hurriedly purchasing tugs and fast steam yachts with a of converting them into torpedo ’>• stroyers. / President McKinley has been requested to strike a blow before the Spanish torpedo flotilla arrives at the East Indies. The Conservatives do not support President McKinley’s efforts to promote peace with Spain. Th^*rfinanciers prefer war to the uncertainty which prevails. Pending the official statement, all the American reports re the Maine disaster are to the effect that the first explosion was external, causing the second explosion in the forward magazine. The Spanish reports deny .that the explosion was external. * President,McKinley desires to treat the Maine explosion as an incident in , itself, preferring to intervene in Cuba on humanitarian grounds. £ '*■ Spanish stocks are falling.
