It is a considerable time since the value of these birds was recognised for military purposes; now they are largely used in this country as a medium of sport. A fledgling or “squeaker *’ will fetch about a guinea, while a racer, or stud-bird, may be worth anything up to £6O. In a race which took place in July last, the winning bird covered, 501 miles, with an average velocity of ] 429 yards per minute for the entire distance. The rate at which homing pigeons fly is almost incredible. With a strong “tailwind'’ these birds will accomplish 60 miles an hour with the greatest ease. •
